Overview of class

Welcome to Holly class! We are a mixed Year 1 and Year 2 class learning within the semi-formal pathway at Sherbrook. Our class team consists of Kate, our class teacher, Sharon, our class teaching assistant, and Stacey, our class inclusion support assistant. 

In Holly Class, we learn best through engaging, practical experiences both inside and outside the classroom. We enjoy short, focused 1:1 learning sessions with our teaching staff and use a range of communication supports, including ALD boards, visuals, photographs, communication books, and Makaton to help us express ourselves and develop our understanding. 

Sensory learning is an important part of our day, providing opportunities to explore, play, and develop the foundation skills needed for mark making and early writing. We also learn through continuous provision activities, where we can independently explore and practise a wide range of fine and gross motor skills. We particularly enjoy outdoor learning and regularly visit different areas of the school to help us make meaningful connections with the world around us. 

This half term in Topic and Science, we are learning all about our bodies and our amazing senses. We have been exploring different body parts, discovering how our bodies help us move, and taking part in exciting sensory activities linked to sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing. In Art, we are exploring self-expression by creating body-inspired artwork, including self-portraits with carefully designed faces and facial features. Through these creative activities, we are developing our observation skills, creativity, and understanding of what makes each of us unique. 

In English, we are enjoying a range of books linked to our 'All About Me' topic. Through these stories, we are exploring what makes each of us unique and special, including our bodies, feelings, family and friends, and the people and places that are important to us. 

In Maths, we are learning to match, sort, and compare objects. We are developing our ability to recognise shared attributes, such as colour, size, and shape, and to group objects accordingly. By sorting and organising objects into sets, we are building important observation, comparison, and problem-solving skills, helping us to notice similarities and differences and make sense of the world around us.

Reminders:

• Holly class do lots of learning outside the classroom and will need waterproof and warm clothing all year round. 
• Reading books need to come in daily; your child will be read at least once a week 1:1 with an adult and will have the chance to pick and change their library book every Tuesday. 
• PE kits need to be worn to school on Fridays please. 
• Please label all clothing and belongings.
