Willow
Overview of class
Welcome to Willow Class. We are an upper KS2 class in the semi formal pathway. Our teachers are Julia and Kerry, our TA is Kat and our ISAs are Emma and Jess. We learn through practical application and lots of opportunities to practice with small group work, continuous provision activities, sensory exploration, attention autism and learning outside the classroom.
This half term we are learning about World War 2 in our topic lessons; learning about which countries fought in the war, what life was like with rationing and air raids, making woodwork tanks and Flanders fields stop motion animations.
In English we are looking at books that link with people having to leave their homes, feeling scared or worried and war including ‘The suitcase’, ‘My name is not refugee’ and ‘Where the poppies now grow’. We are developing our reading, writing, speaking and listening skills describing characters, ordering, reflecting on our own feelings and making responses to the stories.
Our maths area is ‘Place Value’ for this half term and we are developing our number skills by ordering, comparing, partitioning and matching amounts linked to the White Rose Maths scheme Reception – Year 3 work.
In Science we are learning about Light and Sound; exploring sound and light sources, sound waves, how light reflects, how shadows can change and try out filters through lots of practical experiments. Children begin to work and think like scientists by beginning to use scientific terminology, conduct simple experiments and record their findings and using their understanding to explain why. They deepen their knowledge through structured experiments and independent learning through continuous provision.
